Help Support Animals in Crisis!! Bring food from your refridgerator that is about to turn! Time to clean out what you may not have gotten to in time. Please bring any produce that you are willing to donate to the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge- they have many animals who are in need. We will have a bin set up near the produce pick up site- bring food only on co-op pick up days and a volunteer will come to get it by Wed Evening. If the Bin is no longer out then please do not leave your food. Thank you all! Florida farmers had little to offer with the hot weather that we have been experiencing. Here is an update for what has been going on with the co-op.
Christian and I have been on the road quite a bit visiting local farmers and doing our best to get more of the produce for both the upcoming cafe and Emerald Coast Organic Co-op from local growers. Recently we have visited Bill Resmondo owner and developer of superganic farming out in Myrtle Groove near Pensacola. Bill has some very intersteing techniques and emphazises using biological methods to keep his good healthy, as well as special methods for growing his crops and building his soil. Visit his site at SuperganicFarms.com. His Kale is the best I've had, and quite honeslty I'd like to have more.
We have also been out to see Debbie and Robert Hall a couple who do their growning on thier land in Crestview Florida. Debbie and Robert also provide produce for the local farmers market that is being disbanded here in Fort Walton. Debbie cans a lot of her vegetables and is in the process of finishing a cabin style work room for the making of rugs with a loom from recycled clothing.
This past week we went out to Defuniak Springs to meet with the Adams brothers, a delightful couple of guys who are super passionate about growing healthy food for both their own benefit as well as making it avaliable for the community as well. Christian and I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with the guys and got to know them a bit. We are looking forward to growing with them this coming season and to eating some of their healthy food. See more about them below.
Last Weekend we a great turnout for our New Year New You Festival. It rained and poured but that did not stop us from moving the great information and taste inside our yoga studio for the rest of the day.
A big thanks to Jim Horton of Hortons Organics for being on hand with information about gardening and what to use for healthier soil and plants. Also Thanks to Tammy Binkley for all her work in helping to ban the community together to raise money for her charity Off the Mat- visit tammy's site tammysyoga.com for more information and come out to Join us for our Yogathon and do yoga for a cause.
Bridgette Stringfellow had some raw organic treats for sale and tasting and Diana and John Drain from Golden Almond were available with a display of some of the healthy alternatives they stock up down at their Health store the Golden Almond, located on Racetrack road in Ft. Walton Beach.
We also had some of our juices and soups that will make it onto the menu for the new Cafe Organic scheduled to open later this spring or summer.
An added thanks to Ken Roman who graciouslly donated multiple copies of his meditation cd to the yoga studio- the sales of his cd will go towards planting an organic garden at the yoga studio and cafe. We hope to still gather more donations as well as volunteers for the project this spring. Please contact the co-op or the yoga studio to find out how tto help out with our garden.
A few of our farmers that will be growing for both the cafe and co-op were available to talk and meet with those who attended. Unfortunatley due tto the recent cold and freezing temperatures the farmers had no fresh produce with them, however Debbie Hall brought some of her canned goods to sell. David Adams and his wife Margie Adams were around to meet some folks and share a little about their story. We plan to have produce grown from their special biologicalfarming techniques this spring. Their produce is some of the most nutrient dense food around Check out David and his brother Leonard's website to learn more about them.www.adamsfarminc.com
